Program Objectives: The Preparatory Year Program aims at preparing Maher students for their one-year Diploma Program studies at the DCC. The specific objectives of the program are: - to improve students’ English language proficiency , with some emphasis on technical and business applications in preparation for the Diploma Program courses; - to review and reinforce the students’ knowledge of mathematical and analytical techniques through the medium of English; - to consolidate the students’ knowledge of computer science through the medium of English; - to provide students with the study skills needed for effective learning, and the necessary career guidance for informed choice of academic majors; - to develop fitness and health strategies relevant to students’ physical well-being. ______________________________________________________ Program Outcomes: - Students should be able to communicate clearly in English both orally and in writing. - Students should understand basic mathematic terms in English and to use basic mathematic techniques. - Students should have basic competency in the use of computers and be able to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and Microsoft PowerPoint as well as being able to communicate by e-mail. ______________________________________________________ Curriculum Overview The objectives of the Prep Year Programs are achieved through a curriculum made up of the following courses:
ENGL 005 Prep English-I ENGL 006 Prep English-II ENGL 007 Prep English-III ENGL 014 Public Speaking-I ENGL 015 Public Speaking-II CA 021 Computer Applications-I CA 022 Computer Applications-II MATH 021 Foundation Mathematics SKIL 001 Personal Skills-I SKIL 002 Personal Skills-II SKIL 003 Professional Ethics PE 001 Physical Education ______________________________________________________ Course Description: Course Abbreviations CA Computer Applications ENGL English MATH Mathematics PE Physical Education SKIL Personal Skills ______________________________________________________ CA 021 Computer Applications I (2-2-3) This course will cover the basic concepts of information technology and the elements that make-up of a personal computer and concepts such as data storage, memory and viruses, the fundamental functions of a personal computer and its operation system, creating, formatting and finishing a word-processing document, and using more advanced word-processing features. Developing, formatting and using a spreadsheet; using basic formulas and functions to perform standard mathematical and logical functions
CA 022 Computer Applications II (2-2-3) This course will cover the creating, formatting and preparing presentations; using graphics, charts and various slide show effects. Using a Web browser application and search engine tools to accomplish Web search tasks; using Outlook application to send and receive electronic messages, or email, over a network within an intranet, and through the internet, designing and planning a simple database using a standard database package, and retrieving information from an existing database.
ENGL 005 Prep English-I (15-5-8) The course will be divided into two 7.5 week modules. The first module is a communicative-based program using both mainstream and in-house materials, and is designed for General English students at beginner/introductory level. It focuses on building a solid foundation in the four macro-skills, basic grammar, and vocabulary-building with an emphasis on developing functional language skills in everyday situations. Examples are requesting/providing basic personal information, and directions, carrying out shopping transactions, and talking about life experiences. This module will consist of approximately 150 contact hours. The second module of this course, is 150 hour and the first five units of the communicative-based program using the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology English Worldwide Course materials, is designed for General English students at Pre-Intermediate level. Normally, It focuses on extending the solid foundation in the four macro-skills which were built in the first module, with a continuing emphasis on developing functional language skills in everyday situations. Examples are general conversation skills, asking for and giving opinions, and listening in different contexts.
ENGL 006 Prep English-II (15-5-8) The course will be divided into two 7.5 week modules. The first module of this course, is a 150 hour and the second five units of the communicative-based program using the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology English Worldwide Course materials, is designed for General English students at Pre-Intermediate level. Normally, students would have completed ENGL 005 taking this course. It focuses on extending the solid foundation in the four macro-skills which were built into ENGL 005, with a continuing emphasis on developing functional language skills in everyday situations. Examples are general conversation skills, asking for and giving opinions, and listening in different contexts. The second module, which is 150 hours and the first five units of the communicative-based program using the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology English Worldwide Course materials, is designed for General English students at Pre-Intermediate/Stage 2 level. It focuses on extending the solid foundation in the four macro-skills which were built in the first module of this course, with a continuing emphasis on developing functional language skills in everyday situations. Examples are general conversation skills, asking for and giving opinions, and listening in different contexts. Also available are e-learning packs, and independent learning modules.
ENGL 007 Prep English-III (15-5-8) This course, which is a 150 hour and is the last five units in the communicative-based program using the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology English Worldwide Course materials, is designed for General English students at Intermediate/Stage 1 level. Normally, students would have completed ENGL 006 before taking this course. It focuses on extending the solid foundation in the four macro-skills which were built in ENGL 006, with a continuing emphasis on developing functional language skills in everyday situations. Examples are general conversation skills, asking for and giving opinions, and listening in different contexts.
ENGL 014 Public Speaking-I (1-0-1) The Public Speaking course will consist of one hour per week over the duration of one academic year, which will be split into 4 module-semesters of 7.5 weeks each. The course will prepare students to speak in English in contexts where there may be more than one listener, such as a one-on-one interview, a presentation to a group, or a speech in front of an audience. Whatever the situation, certain linguistic and non-verbal features, which will be covered on the course, will be common, and these include appropriateness of language, use of grammatical structures, tone, register, rhythm, and speed of delivery. Other aspects of this course will involve confidence-building, public speaking techniques and approaches, and the importance of eye contact, posture, and gestures, amongst other elements. Students will have speaking tasks throughout the course, with a major assignment towards the conclusion of their course.

SKIL 001 Personal Skills-I (2-0-2)
SKIL 002 Personal Skills-II (2-0-2) These courses will cover some of the key skills needed by college students including goal-setting, motivation, time and stress management, classroom skills, preparing for exams, and analytical/critical thinking.
SKIL 003 Professional Ethics (2-0-2) Good behavior for the integrated Islamic personality, principles of social dealings, professional ethics.
MATH 021 Foundation Mathematics (5-0-5) This course revisits topics of foundation mathematics taken at High School, but this time the medium of instruction will be English from the first day of classes. It contains arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions, percentages and ratios, indices, binary numbers and octal numbers, simplifying algebraic expressions, algebraic fractions, transposing formulae, introduction to trigonometry and solution to triangles. The aim of this course is to provide students with the absolute essential mathematics that they need to continue their studies in courses such as Computer Applications, Accounting, and Marketing.
PE 001A Physical Education-I (0-2-1) This module is designed to provide students with basic nutritional principles related to fitness and sport. The topics covered will include the role of nutrients in physical performance and a healthy lifestyle and special dietary consideration related to aerobic fitness. The students will receive instruction in the fundamental skills, rules, strategies, and the use of equipment of Soccer (football). It also covers training in cardio fitness and the fundamentals of exercises. The topics covered will include activities such as jogging, stretching, calisthenics, and the use of weights.
